Enabling Technology

Elementa’s core technology is based on the chemistry of Steam Reformation, augmented by the Company’s patents, licenses and intellectual property.

The Elementa Process (EP) is flexible, robust and interfaces well with commercially available and proven equipment components. By using this equipment, development and commercialization time lines will be decreased, thereby reducing overall plant costs, while significantly enhancing project return on investments. The proven performance parameters of commercially available equipment will simplify optimization and integration of the components into a complete, closed-loop and low impact, sustainable system.

The Elementa Energy-From-Waste (EFW) system is primarily an energy generation process and secondly a waste management system. This is significantly unlike other competitive EFW systems that are highly dependent on waste disposal fees, making Elementa’s system suitable for a variety of industrial applications.

The Elementa system comprises four key process elements:

  1. Receipt and pre-treatment of feed material
  2. Thermal reformation of carbonaceous material into syngas
  3. Cleaning of syngas to meet process application specifications
  4. Use of syngas to generate user products including electrical energy, thermal energy, direct fuel and/or synthesis products.

Source of Industrial Heat, Energy and Products

Many industries require natural gas as a primary source of process heat and production energy, Elementa’s syngas can directly replace or augment natural gas as an industrial process gas stream. Syngas, when used as a natural gas replacement actually presents a cleaner end-product, primarily since the syngas contains high levels of clean hydrogen.

Syngas is similar to natural gas (i.e. same utility use, but with a lower Btu value per unit volume), in that it can be converted into electrical and thermal energy or cleaned and conditioned for use as a feedstock for the production of ethanol or other higher petroleum synthesis products.

Syngas can also be separated into its primary constituent components of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The presence of a high percentage of hydrogen in the syngas offers an opportunity to provide fuel for a future hydrogen market or as a current direct replacement of industrial hydrogen used in ammonia production, or as used in the steel processing and food industries, among other standard applications. Typically hydrogen has twice the market value of natural gas on a BTU basis.

The system is easily configured to the feedstock supply and is scalable to the desired throughput capacity. As a result, the chemistry of steam reformation produces a clean energy supply and secondarily is a means of waste management through conversion.

Potential Industrial Applications of the Elementa Process

    • Biomass – Forestry wood waste, paper industry by-products and post-consumer and post-production biomass waste; Agricultural waste including purpose grown crops, animal waste, food production and post consumer waste
    • Energy Crops – consists of purpose-grown crops, including biomass, specifically for the production of energy
    • Medical Waste – derived from hospitals, labs, medical centres, research facilities and medical professional offices
    • e-Waste – comprised of used and off-spec electronic goods (cell phones, computers, printers, etc)
    • Coal Products – includes coal tar and other hydrocarbon by-products, e.g. as may be derived from the production of coke
