Medical waste is a designated substance that is a by-product from the clinical world, which includes hospitals, labs, research centres, and a variety of medical facilities all producing infectious and biohazardous waste streams.
Medical waste products cannot be considered general waste and must be handled with the utmost care via secure and environmentally appropriate treatments.
Disposal of this waste is an environmental concern, as many medical wastes can lead to the spread of infectious disease. Examples of infectious waste include blood and other materials from the clinical system which are deemed contaminated.
Infectious waste is often incinerated, and is usually sterilized if it is to be placed in a landfill. Additionally, medical premises produce a variety of waste hazardous chemicals, including radioactive materials. While such wastes are normally not infectious, they may be classified as hazardous and require proper disposal.
